About Me

KATHY KMONICEK

After 30 plus years of working as a photojournalist in the New York Metro area, I relocated to Lake James in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina where I found an array of new subjects to photograph: the magnificent mountain ranges, lakes, waterfalls and scenic vistas found within my new home state. Switching gears from news photography to landscape and nature opened up a whole new career for me and my greatest reward is for you to enjoy my photographs.

My background in photography includes being a staff photographer for two major New York newspapers followed by a full time freelance career where I photographed for The New York Times, the Associated Press, the New York Daily News, and several universities in New York. As a staff photographer for a New York newspaper, I had the honor of being a finalist twice for a Pulitzer Prize. I am most proud to be recognized as a Trailblazer of Light, one of the Pioneering Women of Photojournalism; a generation of courageous and fearless women who made their mark in photojournalism before the advent of digital cameras. Throughout my career, my photographs have been published and recognized worldwide. My education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography. In addition, I have taught photojournalism and photography at various universities in the New York metro area.

Memberships include the Burke Art’s Council in Morganton, N.C. where my photographs have been selected for the People’s Choice Award for two consecutive years and have also placed first and second in photography contests. I am also a member of the National Press Photographer’s Association. My landscape and nature photography is on display in three locations throughout North Carolina: Woolworth Walk in Asheville, N.C., Craft’d and G & G Framing in Morganton, N.C. I also participate regularly in craft fairs in the western North Carolina area. Please check the top of my website for Calendar of Art Shows.
